We've been doing a lot of hand-washing recently, and of course we take for granted a ready supply of hot and cold water when we need it. But things were very different a few hundred years ago. In the 1500s most people chose to get married in June because the groom took his annual bath in May and still smelled pretty good by June. However, he was starting to smell a bit so the bride carried a bouquet of flowers to lessen the impact of his body odour. And despite the huge range of deodorants available today the custom continues.
