There are so many things in life where time spent on preparation makes all the difference to the end product. A few random examples: cooking a meal, playing professional sport, conducting a political interview, repairing potholes in the road or appearing on Strictly Come Dancing. All very different but all will suffer from inadequate preparation.
And this is most certainly true with speechwriting. Gathering good quality material, putting it together so that it has a good structure and a good flow, tweaking it here and there - a bit like a sculptor. All this takes time, but there is absolutely no substitute for time spent on thorough preparation
