I recently wrote a speech for a father of the bride but very sadly his father-in-law (the bride's Grandmother) died very suddenly of a heart attack during the meal - so they never got to the speeches. After getting over the shock the bride's parents felt so sorry for their daughter and son-in-law that they rearranged the reception a few months later - and fortunately this time all went smoothly.
