I know from the many wedding speeches I write that couples meet in a wide variety of interesting places - those that come to mind include a Kibbutz in Israel, the war in Afghanistan, an international banking conference, a coconut shy at a London street party, a trans-Atlantic air flight, a bus in Pretoria, a bag-pipe convention and a parachute drop - as well as the more usual pubs, clubs, schools and universities. However, the growth area for match-making in recent years has undoubtedly been the internet. Many of those who take part in on-line dating are happy for family and friends to know about it, others prefer to keep it to themselves. But whatever reservations anyone might have it undoubtedly brings together many strangers who would otherwise have never met.
